Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa is the founder and chair of the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) and the Former first lady of the Republic of Zambia. The MMCI was Formed by Dr. Mwanawasa in April 2002, after her husband, the late President of Zambia Dr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, was elected president of Zambia. The mission of MMCI has been to uplift the living standards of Zambian children, youth, and women by promoting clean water and sanitation, health care, education, and social welfare.

Among Dr. Mwanawasa’s many accomplishments have been her Advocacy for the Prevention of Mother –To-Child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV/AIDS; negotiating the Maternal and Infant Health Initiative between Zambia and Harvard University; lobbying the Beit Trust to build a Children’s Hospital in Zambia; and facilitating technology grants from the Prince of Wales for the benefit of Zambia’s rural schools. Prior to her work as first lady and founder of MMCI, Dr. Mwanawasa was a partner at the law firm Mwanawasa and Company in Zambia, and an advocate in Zambia’s High Court. She serves on the boards of the Women’s Rights Committee of the Law Association of Zambia, the Female Lawyers Association of Zambia under the Child rights Committee.


Dr Mwanawasa is a Committee Member of the Legal AID Clinic (which provides legal assistance to the poor free of charge) and the Women’s Law Society of the United Kingdom. She is also an alumnus of the Cambridge University of the United Kingdom.

Dr. Mwanawasa received the 2006 World Vision Hope Award and Georgetown University’s John Thompson Legacy of a Dream Award of 2007. She serves on several boards as Patron i.e. patron Breakthrough  Cancer Trust,  Patron Child Care and adoption Society and Patron of Australia Institute of Business and Technology, patron of Zambia  sickle cell anaemia Foundation. She also sits on the Boards of a number of Agricultural organisations and Enterprises. She served as president of the organisation of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS from 2006 to 2008 leading 50 Countries in the Fight against HIV/AIDS. Dr Mwanawasa is also a loving mother of four children, one boy and three girls.
Dr. Mwanawasa received her Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B.) in 1994 from the University of Zambia, and received her MBA in International Business from Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia in 2008. In May 2009 she received an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles California USA.
